The cruise ship Crystal Serenity cast off from Seward Tuesday for a first-of-it’s kind trip through the Arctic’s Northwest Passage to New York City. It’s the first luxury liner to attempt the route — and the largest passenger ship by far. Many people are wondering if it’s a sign of what’s to come, as the Arctic sees increasingly ice-free summers.

Anchorage just recorded its warmest month on record. July was four degrees above normal, with an average temperature of nearly 63 degrees.

North Slope records fall with ‘unprecedented warmth’
Two all time temperature records were set on the North Slope on July 13th and 14th. Deadhorse hit a record high of 85 on July 13th, exceeding the previous record by two degrees. The next day, Kuparuk recorded a temperature of 86 degrees.
Gov. Walker adds cabinet level oil and gas adviser
Gov. Walker said he’s created a new cabinet level position in his administration, an oil and gas adviser. He appointed John Hendrix to the job, who most recently worked as general manager for Apache Alaska.
