Looking for something to make your yard or garden stand out among your neighbors? Try a few big rocks. Maybe some little ones, too.

Master Gardener Ed Buyarski discussed rock features, how to use rock and where to get rock during this week’s edition of Gardentalk that aired on KTOO’s Morning Edition.

Listen to the August 11 edition of Gardentalk about rock:

Small rocks can used be as a form of mulch or weed barrier that doesn’t need to be renewed each year. Flat rocks can be stacked to create low walls, and plants can be planted in the crevices or between the rocks for an interesting garden feature.

Buyarski suggests looking at the area around Mendenhall Lake for inspiration in creating your own version of an alpine garden.

And, he reminds gardeners to not overdue it if they are hauling and placing the rock themselves.

“Pace yourself, and look at the springs and see how low your tires are before you throw in one more rock,” Buyarski said.
