Suspect In Custody After Police Officer Reportedly Shot At U.S. Capitol

The U.S. Capitol Complex in Washington, D.C., was placed on lockdown after reports of shots fired at the visitor’s center Monday afternoon. One officer was said to be wounded, but not seriously injured, according to news reports citing U.S. Capitol Police.

A suspect is in custody, NPR has confirmed.

Staffers, reporters and others were told to “shelter in place” and were not being allowed to exit or enter any buildings.

The White House was briefly put on lockdown, which was shortly lifted, according to news reports.

Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department tweeted that there “is no active threat to the public.”

The visitors center is part of the U.S. Capitol Complex, a group of about a dozen buildings in the nation’s capital, according to its website.
