A former Wrangell doctor convicted on child pornography charges was denied a request for a new trial denied and will be sentenced next month.
Greg Salard’s sentencing is set for Feb. 9 at the U.S. District Court in Juneau. He was convicted in July of distributing and receiving child pornography.
After his conviction, Salard got a private attorney to handle his case. Attorney Steven Wells requested a new trial because Salard claimed his public defender prevented him from testifying on his own behalf.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess denied that request in December.
Salard is facing a sentence of five to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each charge. He could be on supervised release for five years to life. He has been at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau since his arrest in October 2014.
After his sentencing, Salard could be extradited to Louisiana to face a charge of aggravated rape.
