As double stabbing investigation continues, teen suspect appears in court

The teenager that Juneau police arrested after Thursday’s double stabbing may be facing hundreds of years of prison time.

According to online court records, 19-year-old Kevin Scott Nauska was charged with five felonies in court Friday:

  • Three counts of second degree murder,
  • one count of manslaughter
  • and one count of assault.

Police had charged Nauska with six crimes, including first degree murder. However, both sets of charges include several felonies with maximum sentences of 99 years each.

The state’s prosecutor told The Juneau Empire that the charges could change again, because the investigation is only in its early stages. The Empire also reports that Nauska is claiming self-defense.

Nauska is being represented by the Office of Public Advocacy. He’s being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

Thursday’s early morning incident left 37-year-old Jordon J. Sharclane dead and his son, 19-year-old Michael Sharclane, with serious injuries.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of the headline and story erroneously referred to Nauska’s arraignment and have been corrected. The court proceeding was a felony first appearance, not an arraignment. Under Alaska court rules, defendants enter pleas at arraignment, and felony suspects aren’t arraigned until after a grand jury indictment. As of Monday night, Nauska has neither entered a plea nor been indicted.
