Juneau Police Department officials say they have arrested a Juneau man alleged to have walked out of a local gun shop with a handgun last week.

Stephen James Hallum, 21, was arrested late Friday morning after officers reported seeing his vehicle near Cinema Drive. The arrest came within hours after police distributed a set of still photos extracted from surveillance video camera footage at Rayco Sales.

Police report that someone entered the store on Wednesday to discuss firearms with sales staff. Then on Thursday evening, the man returned and took a .357 stainless steel finish snub-nosed Ruger revolver out of an unlocked display case. Police say the suspect walked behind the display case, opened it, and took the gun while a sales clerk was busy elsewhere.

The gun was valued at $443. It has not been recovered yet.

Hallum was charged with felony theft in the 2nd degree and was lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

Juneau Police say they were able to identify the suspect through tips that came into the Juneau Crime Line. Last week’s case highlighted the gun theft and included the stills from the video showing the alleged gun thief. Police announced on Friday evening that an arrest was made in the case.
