Video: Two rescued in skiff grounding at Kanga Bay

The Coast Guard rescued a man and woman after their 17-foot skiff ran aground in Kanga Bay near Sitka on Saturday.

The Sitka Fire Department relayed information from a 9-1-1 call to the Coast Guard, that a man and woman had been thrown out of a skiff when it struck the shore Saturday evening. The man reportedly had suffered injuries to his head and face in the spill. The skiff then drifted away from the couple before they could secure it.

The Sitka Fire Department launched a boat to respond. The Coast Guard helicopter crew arrived and safely hoisted both passengers. Sitka Mountain Rescue located the skiff.

The couple was transferred to emergency medical personnel in Sitka.

The weather was good at the time of the rescue, with 11-mph winds and clear skies, and a temperature of 29 degrees.
