Car in wetlands stops Juneau morning traffic

An early morning accident that landed a car in the wetlands stopped inbound traffic on Egan Drive for at least an hour.

Around 7:30 a.m., Juneau Police Lt. David Campbell says a 2004 Nissan fishtailed shortly after getting onto the highway.

“Looks like the vehicle was merging from the Walmart access onto Egan Drive inbound. Vehicle lost control and hit the guardrail and went through the guardrail and ended up on the wetlands of the flats,” said Campbell.

The female driver, 29, was found awake and conscious, and transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital as a precaution. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Campbell says it’s a 15-foot drop from the road to the wetlands. Inbound lanes of traffic were shut down as the car was removed. The Nissan was totaled and guardrail damage is estimated at $5,000.

The driver may be cited for driving too fast for conditions.
