Alaska VA listening session in Juneau tonight

va logoRepresentatives from the Alaska VA Healthcare System are in Juneau and want to hear from veterans during a listening session tonight.

“We really want to share information about the VA, answer questions and then also to listen to the veterans about what’s going on,” said the system’s director Susan Yeager.

Juneau has had a VA clinic in the Federal Building since 2010. Elsewhere in the state, there are VA clinics in Fairbanks, Mat-Su, Anchorage and Kenai.

This is the second time Alaska VA has held a listening session and Yeager says it’ll be a regular quarterly occurrence.

She wants to discuss the new program through the Veterans Choice Act, signed into law last month, which gives vets easier access to health care appointments.

Yeager says staff with the Veterans Benefits Administration will also be at tonight’s listening session to help with issues like home loans, education and compensation, among others.

“Each person is in a slightly different situation so it’s hard to give an answer of a one size fits all, you might say. So we do bring other people here to actually sit there and work out individual veteran’s concerns and resolve any challenges that they might have,” Yeagar said.

The Veterans’ Listening Session is tonight at the Mendenhall Valley Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
