Bus riders suffer minor injuries after collision

Four people were taken to the hospital Saturday evening after a Capital Transit bus was rear ended by another vehicle.

Juneau Police say the driver of a 2006 Chrysler swerved to avoid an object in the road and hit the parked bus near the intersection of Alaway Avenue and Glacier Highway. The incident occurred at about 10:08 p.m.

Fire Chief Rich Etheridge says four bus riders, identified only as an adult man and three adult women, reported suffering minor aches, bumps, and bruises. They were transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for further evaluation and care. No major injuries were reported.

Both the bus and car sustained damage estimated at more than $4,000. Police say the bus was driven from the scene while the Chrysler had to be towed away.

Juneau Public Works Director Kirk Duncan says the bus will be out of service for about three weeks to await delivery of parts. The accident damaged the rear bumper and a side panel that allows the engine to be serviced.

The driver of the Chrysler was identified as Jessica Eyler, 27. She was cited for failing to exercise due care to avoid colliding with another vehicle.

Etheridge says Capital City Fire/Rescue normally uses one ambulance per patient to allow EMTs to focus on a single individual during transport. Saturday’s incident required ambulances to be dispatched from the downtown, Auke Bay, Douglas and Glacier stations.
