Haines fisherman rescued after vessel sinks

The Coast Guard reports one man is safe after his fishing boat sank in Lynn Canal on Sunday night.

Woody Paul, 25, of Haines was at the helm of the 36-foot Kyra Dawn when it began taking on water about a mile offshore from William Henry Bay.

The boat capsized and sank in about 900 feet of water. Paul was picked up by another nearby fishing vessel, the 28-foot Gabriella from Haines.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Wesley Shipley, watchstander at Sector Juneau, said they were preparing to send an H-60 helicopter from Sitka when the Kyra Dawn reported trouble about 10:44 p.m. Sunday. They canceled the flight after they were notified that Paul had been rescued. Shipley said “it happened really, really quickly.”

Shipley said it was “nasty” out in Lynn Canal with 7 foot seas and winds 35  to 45 knots.

It’s unclear how Paul evacuated the boat and whether he suffered any injuries.
