The biennial gathering of Southeast Alaska Natives known as Celebration is more than a showcase of regalia and dancing, customs and traditions. It’s also a gathering of artists and storytellers; even anthropologists and other social scientists who specialize in Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian research.

Celebration 2010 was held earlier this month and brought more than 5000 participants to Juneau, including Dr. John Scott, a retired professor who received his PhD from the University of Chicago.

The 92-year-old anthropologist remembered a time when Alaska Native culture was something to be hidden, not celebrated.
