David Conrad, professor emeritus of history at Southern Illinois University, first discovered the origins of the Tongass National Forest while going through some materials at the National Archives. He later compiled his research on the creation of the Alexander Archipelago Forest Reserve in an article that appeared in an 1977 issue of Pacific Historical Review.
