Things to See
The fifth season of Rain Country begins with some special attractions. The All-Alaska Logging Championships bringing spectators from all over the world to Sitka and one of the best paying competitions. The bear watchers at Pack Creek are creating some challenges for wildlife managers. In Juneau, thousands view the expanse of the Juneau Icefield on float plane tours.

The Search
In this episode we visit "The Barge Inn", a floating camp at Winter Harbor. In Metlakatla, teachers are showing students what they can do if they know a little about their Native culture. Mary Sarvela visits beaches in the Sitka area and what she finds often ends up in artistic creations.

Food and Drink
For those who paddle the Alaskan Southeast waters in kayaks, we have some gourmet cooking techniques by Linda Daniel, author of Kayak Cookery. A man whose beverage of choice is home made beer, will share his techniques. Finally we'll take a look back to the days when Juneau had its own dairy farms and hear some stories about caring for cattle and the last days of the dairy business.

Communities
This episode chronicles the early days of the Filipino community in Juneau. We learn of the hardships the migrant cannery workers faced and the accomplishments of the community today. A couple celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary in an unusual way when friends and family give them a Hawaiian Luau. Finally, we meet a woman who talks about the cabin she built in St. James Bay.

Water Sports
Water sports are highlighted in this episode of Rain Country. First, we travel to Yakutat to learn about surfing in Alaska, a sport that requires special plans and equipment. A Sitka diving shop owner teaches diving and underwater photography. Finally we take a memorable trip to Tracy Arm and experience the spectacular sights of this glacial fiord.

Creativity
Meet three of Southeast Alaska's creative talents. Jo Ann George of Angoon fell in love with the Tlingit culture, gave up teaching and became an artist. Mell Flood of Juneau is profiled as conductor of the Juneau Symphony. His musical pursuits also include opera and his own Big Band. Creating and teaching dance is Lynette Turner's passion. She's choreographed for Juneau's Perseverance Theater and conducts workshops for area schools.

Inside the AJ
This episode is devoted entirely to Juneau's A.J. gold mine as we travel inside the mine with some of the retired gold miners. They remember what life was like and share some of their memories of how the mine operated.

Special Pursuits
Special Pursuits are the theme of this episode of Rain Country as we meet a man whose been taking photographs of Alaska since the 1930's. Next we go to the Totem Heritage Center in Ketchikan, where master carvers are keeping this artform alive. Finally we meet the Juneau Jumpers, a group of 300 young people that do some amazing things with jump ropes.

Folk Crafts
A variety of folk arts provide enjoyment for the people of Southeast Alaska. First we meet the Juneau Quilters as they get together to do a little sewing. Jim and Salty Hanes work at home. Jim builds and repairs musical instruments and Salty designs and sews specialty products. And when the work is done another way to have fun is attending the monthly barn dance!

Getting Physical
In Southeast Alaska athletes take to the field in seasonal activities from softball to soccer and on to winter pursuits.

On the Water
Travel on the "Hungry Jack", a gillnetter working the Taku Inlet. In Sitka, the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association is teaching the proper use of survival equipment and in Juneau, thousands of fishermen search for a special salmon during the annual Golden North Salmon Derby.

Going Places
The culture, climate and natural beauty of Southeast Alaska combine to make some jobs very special. We visit with a park ranger working in Glacier Bay, meet Native performers in the Naa Kahidi Theater and ride in the cockpit with airline pilots flying between communities.

Getting Away From It All
While some people move to Southeast Alaska to get away from the big city life there are other people who have moved away from Southeast Alaskan cities. Stan Price prefers to live with the bears at Pack Creek on Admiralty Island. Then there are the Coast Guard personnel stationed at Five Finger Light Station who are very isolated. Still others have found a compromise by living in smaller communities like Tenakee Springs or Coffman cove.

Playing Hard
Living in the marine environment of Southeast Alaska provides for lots of outdoor activities. Travel with participants in a sailboat race around Admiralty Island. Mining Ruins
Several of Juneau's mining ruins provide the hiker with a variety of things to see. Treadwell was the largest mine on Douglas Island, today only pilings, foundations and pieces of scrap remain. The A.J. Mine has a few standing buildings in Last Chance Basin and the burned out remains of the A.J. Mill is, perhaps, Juneau's most famous landmark.
