Getting Around
Southeasterners love the out-of-doors, and there's a variety of ways to get out and about. We start off by putting one foot in front of the other and hiking one of Juneau's many trails with Parks and Recreation volunteers. If the Mt. Roberts trail doesn't get you high enough, visit with Juneau pilot Ed Keller as he explains why he enjoys flying. Ed also shares some tips about learning to fly. Getting back down to earth, we take a relaxing float trip down the Mendenhall, Alaska's biggest money-making white-water river.

The Next Generation
Journey to Haines and visit with Chief Austin Hammond at the Chilkoot Culture Camp. Every year young people go to the camp to learn traditional Native values in both work and play activities. Then its off to visit Sierra Kadden. This Gustavus teenager talks about her travels, growing up in a small town and, of course, about riding her horse. Neighbors
In this episode, meet some of our Southeast neighbors. Charles Schmidt came to Alaska in 1949 to find adventure. He lost his hearing when he was 2, but that hasn't stopped him from learning to fly, gold panning or pursuing a variety of career interests. Running an inn in Gustavus is a family business for Joanne and David Lesh. And staying active in a variety of volunteer programs keeps Juneau seniors on the go.

Creativity
Our look at creativity starts at Perseverance Theatre's stage with a visit with Molly Smith, the company's founder and artistic director. Writing is what keeps Sheila Nickerson going. Putting out ADF&G's wildlife magazine is her job; creating poetry is her passion. For a group of Juneau residents, music is their passion. They meet once a month to sing.

Being Creative
Take a look at Southeast creativity in various forms. Stone lithography is what R.T. (Skip) Wallen is best know for, but recently he has been doing bronze sculptures based on his more popular prints. Juneau's Arts-R-Us group experiments with different art forms; they take a video camera to try another form of creativity. The middle ages come to life when the Society for Creative Anachronism meets.
Program 411 - $19.95 (US) - Runs: 28 minutes - NTSC VHS

From The Water
Southeast waters are home to such creatures as Sea Lions; we take some time to learn about these interesting creatures. Other sea creatures, like salmon, are inspirations to Ketchikan artist Ray Troll; his unique approach to art is often humorous. For those who pursue salmon for sport, instead of art, the Coast Guard Axillary provides some safe boating services.
Program 412 - $19.95 (US) - Runs: 28 minutes - NTSC VHS

Southeast Wildlife
The bald eagle is an endangered species in 43 of the 48 states, but 12,000 adult eagles call Southeast Alaska home. Some of their young are finding new homes in other states to help repopulate the species. The forest and waters of Southeast also provide unique opportunities to see and study other wildlife. The feeding requirements of deer provide Forest Service biologists information helpful in managing the Tongass National Forest. Sea otters are also being studied to determine the effects of reintroducing this once endangered species to our shores.
