The plan is for volunteers this summer to prune some encroaching vegetation, and to plant spruce seedlings in the footprint of the peace sign. Eventually, they expect the spruce will outgrow and contrast with the existing alders on the hillside.

Kiehl is moving on to serve in the Alaska Senate. That means he’ll resign his seat on the Juneau Assembly before taking office in January. Whoever is chosen to replace him will serve until next October’s municipal election, when the seat will be placed on the ballot.
New city committee tackles child care availability
Creating the committee was one of Mayor Beth Weldon’s first actions upon taking office last month. According to a report by the Southeast Alaska Association for the Education of Young Children, there are only enough licensed child care slots for one in five children under school age in Juneau.
Juneau Assembly prepares to upgrade city smoking ban
The Assembly advanced an ordinance on Monday to bring Juneau into compliance with a new state anti-smoking law. The biggest change would be an increase in the smoking buffer outside of business entrances.
