Skagway Mayor Andrew Cremata acknowledged the summer season, usually worth an estimated $160 million, is going to be radically different. But he said Skagway is going to make it through another year.

NOAA Fisheries confirmed that the agency’s Office of Law Enforcement determined Holland America Line’s Eurdoam altered course and slowed speed as it approached the humpback whales on June 24.

There’s been another norovirus outbreak on a cruise ship docking in Juneau. Health and tourist officials say next time they’d appreciate a courtesy call before an infected ship arrives.

At least 73 people have reportedly fallen ill aboard the Zaandam following an outbreak of norovirus on the Holland America cruise ship. It’s the second reported outbreak of norovirus this year on a cruise ship in Alaska.

Passenger fees total about $45 million a year statewide, said John Binkley, president of Cruise Lines International Association Alaska. He said pooling that would allow other cities to boost their industries, too.

Cruise ships sailing to Alaska are getting bigger and bigger. One planned for 2019 is twice the size of many of the ships already sailing here.

An economic study commissioned by Juneau’s Docks and Harbors projects 1.5 million cruise ship visitors in 10 years. The city is developing an urban plan for the downtown waterfront as visitors numbers increase.

Alaska’s cruise ship passenger numbers are expected to top 1 million this year. Next year, another 60,000 will show up.
