A Coast Guard aircrew assisted four people aboard a fishing vessel in danger of sinking late Feb. 2. The 53-foot F/V Pacific Star was taking on water in the vicinity of Fairweather Ground, about 50 miles southeast of Lituya Bay.
It’s the first winter in Bethel since a liquor store opened after almost 40 years of illegal sales. Alcohol is easier than ever to get, and Bethel Search and Rescue says the number of calls they receive, almost all alcohol-related, has spiked. Volunteers are getting worn out, resources are depleting and the organization is asking the community for help.
A missing person case for Anchorage police turned into a death investigation on Thursday. A graduate of Nome-Beltz Junior/Senior High School, Martina Painter, 25, was found dead Thursday afternoon. She was the only person in a blue four-door Dodge Dart located in a parking lot near University Lake Park in Anchorage.
A search and rescue wrapped up Tuesday morning with three people returned safely to Levelock. Danielle Dobkins, Ivon Washington, and Paul Chukwak, all in their 40s, had made a trip to Naknek by four-wheeler Sunday morning, and had broken down on the return trip on Sunday evening.
