Legislation to increase the Petersburg borough’s land grant from the state passed the Alaska Senate on Monday, April 10. The bill would transfer more than 14,000 acres to the new borough, which hopes to develop or sell off some of the property.

CBJ starts work on downtown water main replacement
The Project Manager said the current water main is too old and CBJ wants to replace it before the Department of Transportation starts resurfacing Egan Drive between 10th St. and Main Street this fall.
Recall effort underway for three Haines Assembly members
A group of Haines residents is trying to recall half of the borough assembly, including the two newest members. Resident Don Turner Jr., along with nine other people, signed three requests for recall petitions. They accuse Assembly members Tom Morphet, Heather Lende and Tresham Gregg of misconduct in office.
Most property assessments rise in Juneau
Juneau property owners should have received property value notices that were mailed out last week. About 60 percent of properties saw their tax bill increase. These went up an average 3.5 percent; though some saw a hike as high as 10 percent.
Anchorage voters opt for bonds, more liberal Assembly
In Anchorage’s municipal elections Tuesday, liberals gained an edge in the Assembly, and residents supported all but one bond measure put forward passed. Voters also opted to shake up the taxi industry.

Unalaska terminates new fire chief charged with sexual assault in Illinois
The man hired to serve as Unalaska’s new fire chief has been fired after he was charged with sexual assault in Illinois. David “D.J.” Dunn was scheduled to arrive Monday in Anchorage before starting work on the island next week.
Ketchikan’s first pot shop set to open
The Stoney Moose will open this week as Ketchikan’s first retail marijuana shop, if an inspection goes well. Owners also hope to open a cannabis café.
Juneau planning commission to consider warehouse pot grow
Another marijuana grow facility is scheduled to go before the Juneau Planning Commission on Tuesday. If approved, it would add to the growing number of licensed cultivators in the capital city.
