Officials are preparing to raise a sunken 81-foot tugboat Powhatan. A crane barge arrived from Seattle over the weekend, the Daily Sitka Sentinel reported Monday, and divers are going to work over the week to prepare to lift the tug, which sank April 19.
Alaskans will celebrate the 75th anniversary this year of the Alaska Highway. Organizers of those celebrations plan to include tributes to the African-American soldiers who helped carve the road out of rugged wilderness.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating how and why a Juneau-bound helicopter ferrying tourists crashed during a glacier excursion. The pilot and six tourists were treated and released at Juneau’s hospital with minor injuries.
