Juneau Bishop Edward J. Burns appointed to Dallas diocese

JUNEAU — Pope Francis has named an Alaska bishop to be the new bishop in Dallas.

Bishop Edward J. Burns of Juneau, Alaska, will succeed Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Farrell left Dallas after being appointed to lead a new office for families and laity, becoming the highest-ranking American at the Vatican.

The Diocese of Juneau says Burns’ appointment was announced Tuesday.

In a release, the 59-year-old Burns says he is grateful for the experience he has had in southeast Alaska and humbled by his new appointment.

Burns was born and raised in Pennsylvania and ordained a priest in 1983.

He has served as bishop of Juneau since 2009.

Burns’ installation as bishop of the Diocese of Dallas is scheduled for February.
