JUNEAU — Anchorage Republican Rep. Charisse Millett will serve as House minority leader during the upcoming Legislature. Nikiski Rep. Mike Chenault, the long-serving speaker of the House, will be minority whip.
Millett served as majority leader during the 2015 and 2016 sessions. The National Conference of State Legislatures says key responsibilities for the whip generally include counting votes and ensuring member attendance.
Eagle River Rep. Dan Saddler will be minority floor leader, helping the minority with issues arising during floor sessions and coordinating communications.
While Republicans will hold 21 of the House’s 40 seats during the next Legislature, three Republicans joined with Democrats and independents to form a new majority. The new House minority stands at 18 Republicans.
Reps. Lance Pruitt, Cathy Tilton, Tammie Wilson and Steve Thompson are expected to serve on the House Finance Committee as minority members.
Thompson was a committee co-chair during the 2015 and 2016 sessions.
