High winds forecast for Aleutians, Alaska Peninsula

Residents of the central and eastern Aleutian Islands could see strong winds Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Unalaska and the eastern Aleutians that begins Friday night and ends Saturday night.

The agency forecasts west winds of 60 to 75 mph with gusts to 95 mph. Residents were warned to secure loose debris that could damage property.

Lower sustained winds with strong, erratic gusts are expected in Dutch Harbor.

A high wind warning also is in effect Friday night for the central Aleutians with a prediction of west winds of 50 to 65 mph and gusts to 80 mph. Those winds are expected to diminish Saturday morning.

Similar high winds are predicted on the Alaska Peninsula from noon to midnight Saturday.
