Bethel to start football team with boost from Seahawks

Bethel is on its way to having its first football team.

KYUK reports all Bethel Regional High School needs is funding, equipment, players, a coach and approval from the state.

But administrators at the school in remote southwestern Alaska are confident the Warriors will field a team next year, likely playing games in the Anchorage area.

Bethel athletic director Doug Boyer says the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to send old tackling dummies and sleds to Bethel as long as the school pays for the barge. And Boyer says the Seattle Seahawks Foundation will provide about $20,000, or half the cost to buy shoulder pads helmets and uniforms for 50 players.

He’s confident fundraisers and donations will cover the other half.
