Assemblyman Dan Rohrer left his assembly seat in order to take over from Jerrol Friend, whose term expired this month and who had served as borough mayor since October 2013.
Rohrer ran unopposed at the recent municipal elections and won 1,983 votes.
At the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly regular meeting last Thursday, Borough Manager Michael Powers presented a certificate to Friend for his three years of service.
“When I asked around the community for words of wisdom to say about Jerrol, the absolutely unanimous response I got from people was Jerrol’s always cared about this community and will always be involved in it, and I don’t think there’s any higher honor [that] can be said than that, that you do care about Kodiak and you’ve always been involved and you will always be involved, and so it’s my honor and pleasure to present this to you.”
The borough clerk then administered the oath of office to Rohrer and recently elected assemblymen Scott Smiley and Matt Van Daele.
Smiley and Van Daele ran against Monique Lewis and write-in James Turner in the October election. Now the seat Rohrer left behind is up for grabs. According to a notice from the Kodiak Island Borough, the term will expire in October 2017 and applications are available at the Borough Clerk’s Office and on the Kodiak Island Borough website. The final deadline for applications is November 4.
