Grand jury formally indicts man accused of shooting officer

The man accused of shooting a Fairbanks police officer has been formally indicted by a grand jury.

Fairbanks District Attorney Gregg Olson says the grand jury indicted Anthony G. Jenkins-Alexie Thursday with attempted murder and seven other counts. Seven charges are identical to the counts originally charged in a complaint against Jenkins-Alexie, plus one additional evidence tampering charge.

Police Sgt. Allen Brandt pulled over to talk to a man walking on the street early Sunday. Authorities say Alexie-Jenkins shot the officer five times, stole his gun and took off for a few blocks in the police cruiser.

Brandt was recovering from his wounds after being transferred to an Anchorage hospital.

Alexie-Jenkins is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning. He is being held without bail. Online court records don’t list an attorney for him.
