Remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice

Juneau firefighters remembered their colleagues who have perished in the line of duty during the Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial Candle Light Service that was held at the downtown Juneau fire station Saturday evening.

Firefighting remains one of the most dangerous occupations in the country with firefighters seriously injured or killed while responding to emergency calls. Incidents include firefighters being struck by other vehicles while responding to a roadside accident or becoming trapped during the collapse of a burning structure.

Participants at the Saturday service lit candles as firefighters read the names of their fallen colleagues in Alaska and around the country. The service featured remarks by Deputy City Manager Mila Cosgrove, and readings of the “Firefighter’s Poem” and “A Firefighter’s Prayer.”
