Dam release raises water levels along Kenai River

Residents are being advised that Kenai River water levels are rising into next week.

The Peninsula Clarion reports that a release last week from the Skilak Glacier Dammed Lake is pushing the water level higher.

National Weather Service Anchorage hydrologist Crane Johnson said an alert was issued to inform people in the area.

The alert says now is the time to take precautions like moving items to higher ground.

Online weather service hydrographs show water is projected to reach 9.6 feet on the Kenai River at Soldotna by Sunday.

The graphs say the area’s flood status is at 12 feet.

He said alerts will be updated depending on whether water levels exceed or fall below expectations.

Johnson said the dam releases water every two or three years.
