Alaska State Fair institutes ‘smoke-free’ policy

For 80 years, The Alaska State Fair has been operating without prohibiting smoking on fair grounds. This year’s fair, which opened yesterday in Palmer, is changing its policy on smoking.

Following a policy update in January, smoking is not permitted anywhere within the fences of the fairgrounds property. According to the Alaska State Fair website, officials implemented the policy with the intent to “provide for the health, safety and welfare of our patrons, vendors, exhibitors, volunteers and employees.”

Fairgoers are required to be 40 feet away from fair entrances if they want to puff smoke.

The State Fair will be open until September 5th, noon to 10 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekends.
