Restaurant suspends Chena River golf game after complaint

A complaint about river pollution has led to the suspension of a popular golf game at a Fairbanks restaurant.

Pike’s Landing is no longer letting patrons try to hit golf balls across the Chena River.

Environmental activist Rick Steiner asked the state Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate the game because state and federal laws prohibit dumping plastics in rivers.

Steiner says golf balls likely flow all the way to the Bering Sea, where they’re a hazard to wildlife mistaking balls for food.

Mike Solter, a state water rules compliance manager, says Pike’s Landing has suspended the game but is looking for a way to resume it, possibly with biodegradable golf balls.

Steiner says they also would harm the river.

Calls to Pike’s Landing were not returned Monday.
