Challenger update: What goes up must come down

Efforts to raise the tug Challenger, wrecked in Gastineau Channel last year, may resume Monday.

Contractors Global Diving & Salvage hoisted the vessel part way up Sunday, but they had problems with dewatering the vessel and the barge-mounted crane that is hoisting the tug was approaching its weight limit.

The tug was lowered back down to the bottom.

The Coast Guard said they’ll meet with the contractors Monday to come up with a new dewatering strategy.

KTOO’s David Purdy was aboard a Coast Guard boat during the raising Sunday and tweeted these photos and updates.
