Diver dies in Sunday incident near Kodiak

One man is dead after a diving accident near Kodiak Island on Sunday morning.

The diver’s name was not released by the U.S. Coast Guard, but he was a crew member aboard the vessel Mommo Maddi when it was conducting diving operations about 3 miles off Sitkalidak Island.

The diver was in about 40 feet of water when his compressor failed or shut off.

Petty Officer Trevor Frommherz, watchstander at the Coast Guard’s Command Center in Juneau, says they dispatched an H-60 helicopter from Kodiak and a rescue swimmer was lowered to the vessel. After more than 30 minutes of CPR and consultation with the flight surgeon, the diver was declared dead.
