As many as 150 emergency medical technicians, nurses and physicians from around the Panhandle are in Juneau this week for training.

Mikaela Hagburg, a nurse with Airlift Northwest, is helping coordinate the Southeast Regional Emergency Medical Services Symposium.

“As either an EMS provider or clinician, what can you do to help prep that patient for us to fly that patient potentially an hour-and-an-half to two-and-half hours to the final destination?” Hagburg said. “Southeast Alaska has very unique needs as a community. And so, how do we address those needs?”

Hagburg says some of the training focuses on basic and advanced life support, clinical assessments, long-range medical transports, concussions and common Southeast street drugs.

Attendees include volunteers from smaller Southeast Alaska communities and professionals from hospitals and clinics, while trainers include physicians from Seattle.

The Southeast Regional Emergency Medical Services Symposium runs through Sunday at Juneau’s Centennial Hall, Baranof Hotel and local fire stations.
