Driver looks at phone, runs off road

A Juneau woman was issued a citation for distracted driving after she ran her car off Egan Drive in a single vehicle accident Thursday afternoon.

The Ford Escape driven by Kathleen Peterson, 45, was heading inbound near Fred Meyer just before 4 p.m. when it left the roadway, hit a light pole, and went into the wetlands.

Peterson did not sustain any serious injuries. She was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Investigators say Peterson was traveling between 60 and 70 miles per hour when she looked at her phone for an incoming text message. They say distracted driving and excessive speed contributed to the accident.

Peterson was issued a ticket for a misdemeanor charge of use of electronic device while driving.
