Man rescued from downtown waterfront

Firefighters rescued a man who fell into Gastineau Channel at the downtown library and Marine Parking Garage on Friday afternoon.

The unidentified 28-year-old was reported as face down and unconscious, floating in the water near pilings underneath the garage.

According to a dispatch from Capital City Fire/Rescue, Chief Rich Etheridge was on scene within 30 seconds of the call just before 1:30 p.m. Friday. Additional firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes.

Etheridge, Firefighter Jesse Echave, and Capt. Todd Cameron scaled the rocks to the beach line and retrieved the man. Echave and Cameron swam out in the 38 degree water.

After the man was brought to shore, firefighters started CPR and then transported the man to an ambulance for the trip to the hospital. He was last reported as having a pulse during the transport.
