Comment period extended for Juneau Access

If you’re still interested in weighing in on the Juneau Access Improvement project – or road project, as it’s commonly known – you have some extra time. The period to comment on the most recent environmental document on the project has been extended an extra 15 days the state Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday. DOT spokesman Jeremy Woodrow said the state has received several requests to expend the comment period.

“Federal Highways received several comments from groups and individuals requesting an extension and they’ve decided to grant that extension until Nov. 25 and we’re complying with the Federal Highway’s wish.”

The state and federal highways are required to have at least a 45 day comment period. The original period was scheduled to end Nov. 10. Three public meetings were held in Juneau, Haines and Skagway.

No more public meetings will be held during the extended comment period, but it will allow residents, groups and agencies more time to delve into the more than thousand-page Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement released in September on the road project.

Woodrow says the state has received several hundred comments since the document was released.
