Petersburg man appears in federal court on explosive charges

Arraignment is being delayed for a Petersburg man on charges related to possession of explosives after he was injured in blast this summer.

Mark Weaver, 59, is currently being held in Anchorage, but appeared by video conference Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Juneau. He wore yellow prison garb and thick-framed glasses, and did not appear to be wearing handcuffs or other restraints as he sat next to his attorney, Phillip Weidner.

The Anchorage-based private defense lawyer has not yet decided whether to permanently take on Weaver’s case. He said Weaver’s assets are currently tied up in ongoing divorce proceedings, and he asked that Weaver remain in Anchorage so he can consult with him over the next few weeks.

Weaver is now scheduled for arraignment Oct. 23 in Anchorage. There may be an additional hearing on whether he’ll be released with certain conditions or continue to be detained.

Weaver was injured in an explosion in the rock pit behind Petersburg’s airport in July and medevaced to Seattle. He was arrested in Washington state in August, after he was indicted for possessing a destructive device and seven hand grenades that were not registered to him.

After July’s explosion federal agents blew up 50 pounds of Tovex, a commercial explosive seized while searching Weaver’s home, truck, and another property outside downtown Petersburg.
