Alaskans can safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs Saturday as part of the year’s first National Drug Collection Day.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says unwanted medications will be collected from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations around the state, including the Anchorage Police Department and other police or Alaska State Trooper locations.

People in Juneau can drop off their unwanted medications at the Nugget Mall.

The agency says disposal keeps discarded drugs from entering water bodies or causing public health problems.

Alaskans disposed of 2,722 pounds of drugs a year ago and another 1,838 pounds in October.

The state total is nearly 10,000 pounds since September 2010.

Drugs are collected anonymously.

A list of drop-off sites can be found at the National Take Back Initiative website.
