A new bill aims to keep kids in school more days per year.
HB155, by Rep. Andy Josephson, would extend the school term to 190 days from 180.
The bill would also extend the amount of instruction hours required for all students in K-12 – especially those in the second and third grades.
According to Josephson’s sponsor statement, 40 states and the District of Columbia currently require more school days than Alaska. Plus they lag behind students worldwide.
The Anchorage Democrat says Alaska’s students need to be given the same opportunities as those in other nations if they are going to succeed in the future.
