Study says most seafood workers live out of state

A state Department of Labor report concludes that three-fourths of Alaska’s seafood processing workers reside out of state.

The figures were revealed in the department’s annual report on residency of Alaska workers.

Seafood processing leads other fields in nonresident workers. It’s followed by the tourism industry.

Both are heavily seasonal.

Overall, just more than 20 percent of Alaska’s 414,000 workers don’t live in the state.

That’s the highest percentage since 1997.
