Two-time Iron Dog champion injured in crash
Two-time Iron Dog champion Tyler Huntington has been seriously injured in a crash.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Huntington was going between 80 and 90 mph on Monday when he hit a piece of driftwood about three miles north of Shaktoolik. He suffered a broken pelvis and possible internal injuries.
Huntington’s racing partner and villagers from Shaktoolik helped Huntington onto a stretcher and loaded him in a dog sled. He was towed into the village by snowmachine and flown to Anchorage for surgery.
The crash ended Huntington’s dream of winning a third Iron Dog title in four years. The 27-year-old racer said it was the worst crash of his career.
