Money stolen from homeless shelter’s locked safes

Thousands of dollars is missing from two locked safes at a homeless shelter in Anchorage.

What makes matters worse, most of the $8,500 belonged to homeless people who sleep at the Brother Francis Shelter.

The Anchorage Daily News says that Catholic Social Services, which runs the shelter, discovered the theft on Dec. 27 and reported it to police.

Executive director Susan Bomalaski says the money will be replaced. She says some shelter clients are required to save 70 percent of any income they receive to pay for housing when they leave, and that was the money that was stolen as well as some petty cash.

A spokeswoman for Catholic Social Services said there’s no evidence that any donations to the charity were stolen.
