Arctic explorer makes third Denali attempt
An Arctic explorer wants to be the first solo mountaineer to reach Mt. McKinley’s summit in January.
Lonnie Dupre is gearing up for his third attempt at a January solo summit of North America’s highest mountain.
KTUU-TV reports that only nine expeditions have ever reached the McKinley summit in winter, and only one of those was in January. Of the original nine expeditions, four were solo.
However, none of the solo ventures was in January. That month is the darkest and coldest time on the mountain.
Dupre’s climb will be part of a documentary called “Cold Love.” He says it is an attempt to bring attention to Alaska’s vanishing glaciers and the importance of the Arctic climate.
