Trailer of Walmart merchandise burns in Fairbanks

Fire officials say a tractor-trailer full of Walmart merchandise caught fire Monday afternoon behind the Fairbanks superstore.

Battalion Chief Brian Davis tells the Daily News-Miner that the driver initially noticed smoke coming from the trailer. The fire intensified in the mixed load once the trailer was opened to the air.

Dozens of firefighters responded, cycling in and out of fighting the blaze. With temperatures hovering around -40 degrees, they stopped periodically to warm up on an orange inflatable dome.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
