No active oil spill found near island
Investigators have determined that there is no active oil spill near St. Lawrence Island.
KTUU-TV says the Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, and the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife have been working with Gambell and Savoonga on reports of oiled wildlife found in November.
Investigators conducted an aerial survey. They also collected samples for analysis taken from St. Lawrence Island’s shoreline with the help of local guides. The analysis of the samples revealed degraded heavy oil, but none matched that found on wildlife.
Officials said Thursday they do not think there is an active oil spill.
The situation will be monitored.
