The village of St. Paul in the Pribilof Islands has closed its police department.
The Anchorage Daily News says the village of about 480 people on St. Paul Island expects the closure to be temporary. It says the closure was done this week because of “unanticipated staff departures.”
Alaska State Troopers learned about the closure on Sunday and are fielding 911 calls from the community. Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters says as of Wednesday only four emergency calls had come in, and she says none required a trooper to travel to the village, which is about 300 miles west of the Alaska mainland.
