Bear attempts to raid food bank in Kodiak

A brown bear in Kodiak tried to raid a food bank by smashing a window.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror says Monday’s attempted break-in was thwarted when the bear couldn’t squeeze through the small opening at the Kodiak Baptist Mission Food Bank.

Mission director Trevor Jones says the bear never made it inside.

Bear sightings within city limits have again spiked with the winter’s first blizzard.

The increase could be short-lived as bears go into hibernation and a road system hunt takes care of animals that stay awake.

Biologist John Crye with the state Department of Fish and Game says hunters have reported more than a dozen bears in the Kodiak road system.

Police Chief T.C. Kamai says hunting is generally discouraged within city limits.
