Family: Woman killed herself after sexual assault
The family of a woman who allegedly was sexually assaulted say she has killed herself.
The Anchorage Daily News reports that the woman shot herself in Naknek over the weekend.
Prosecutors now are evaluating their case against 45-year-old Sergie Andrew Chukwak, who authorities say assaulted a woman – identified as “K.L.” -Nov. 5 after a night of drinking.
The state had planned to seek an indictment on a felony rape charge against Chukwak, who is a commercial fisherman and director of the Bristol Bay Native Corp. Assistant District Attorney Marianna Carpeneti says prosecutors now are trying to determine if there is enough evidence to pursue the case without victim testimony. She says police are talking to witnesses.
Chukwak told a magistrate during a hearing Monday that he is innocent.
Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that the police had said a woman who had been sexually assaulted had killed herself. The story has bee updated with the correct attribution.
