Open house held at new Nome hospital
The public in Nome got a peek at the town’s new hospital that is slated to open Jan. 31.
The Norton Sound Regional Hospital, which held an open house Wednesday, is triple the size of the current hospital.
Officials say the hospital will have 18 patient beds and another 18 beds in its nursing home wing.
The Norton Sound Health Corp., a tribally owned nonprofit, owns the hospital, which also will offer dental and laboratory services as well as a pharmacy, diagnostic imaging and an emergency room among other services.
The hospital will serve the 10,000-resident Bering Straits region including Nome’s 3,700 residents.
Norton Sound Health Corporation spokeswoman Monica Watchman says plans are under way to turn the old hospital into a regional substance abuse wellness center in the future.
