GCI subsidiary to buy three Alaska TV stations

A subsidiary of GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications company, is buying three TV stations, including the CBS affiliate in Anchorage and two NBC affiliates in Southeast Alaska.

Denali Media Holdings is acquiring KTVA in Anchorage from its current Denver-based ownership. It’s also purchasing NBC affiliates KATH in Juneau and KSCT in Sitka from Juneau-based North Star Broadcasting.

GCI President Ron Duncan says the intent is to turn the three stations into a statewide news and entertainment leader.

In a release, GCI says former KTUU news director John Tracy has been tapped as lead consultant to rebuild and rebrand the news department. Tracy was news director at Anchorage’s NBC affiliate from 1989-2008.

The purchases are subject to Federal Communication Commission approval, which is expected early next year.
